Prepping to Clean Your Siding

Once you've determined your siding needs a cleaning, remember to check what kind it is. Some types of siding require different approaches than others because of the materials they're made of. For example, wood siding can be washed with mild soap and water, while vinyl siding can be scrubbed with a cleaning solution that must be rinsed before it dries completely. This is to avoid stains from forming.

After determining the type of siding you're dealing with, gather the recommended cleaning materials. While many homeowners choose power washing house siding, it's not always the best option. Using too much pressure or improper technique can cause damage. If needed, we recommend a low-pressure washer for a safer clean.

What you're trying to clean off your siding will most likely fall into one of three categories: dirt, oil and grease, or mold and mildew.

Cleaning Dirt

To clean dirt off your siding, you'll need a soft cloth or brush and a garden hose. Do NOT use an abrasive sponge (e.g., iron wool) or metal brush, as they could damage the siding. Brush the dried dirt off and rinse the area, working one small section at a time. Start at the top and move downward to prevent dirty water from dripping and ruining your hard work.

Cleaning Oil and Grease

Like dirt, you'll want to clean off oil and grease with a soft cloth and hose. You'll also need a mild dishwashing soap. Dump your cloth in soapy water and gently rub it back and forth against the siding, rinsing it frequently. Once it's all covered in suds, run the hose over it to rinse the siding off.

Cleaning Mold and Mildew

To remove mold from siding, get a soft sponger, hose, and mildew-specific cleaner. Ensure you wear protective gear since you'll be handling chemicals. Be absolutely sure you're dealing with mold and mildew before applying a solution (sometimes dirt can resemble it). Once you're confident it's mold and mildew, lightly scrub the area, follow the cleaner's instructions closely, and rinse it off with the hose.

Maintaining Cleanliness

Maintaining your siding's cleanliness is key to preventing potential problems. Your first line of defense is a well-kept paint job, which acts as a barrier between your siding and the elements. You should plan on repainting every 5-10 years, but this may vary based on your area's climate and the environment surrounding your home. If you see any chips or peeling paint, repaint it ASAP to prevent water from getting in and causing damage. Regular maintenance isn't a chore; it's a proactive step toward protecting your home.

Never go more than two years in between thorough siding cleaning. Otherwise, you may need more potent chemicals to get the job done. Regular walk-around inspections are also crucial, looking for cracks, insect infestations, rot, deteriorating paint, and water damage like warping or peeling. If you see any problems, address them ASAP to stop them from developing into a costlier issue.

Cleaning Woes: Knowing When It Needs to Go

Most siding will last at least 20 years, though that number will depend on your local weather and upkeep. But, at some point, regular cleaning doesn't cut it anymore. To know when it's to say sayonara to your current siding, ask yourself:

  1. How old is it?

  2. What maintenance do you need to do?

  3. Is there damage, and how extensive is it?

  4. Do you plan on living in the house for a long time?

  5. How does it look in comparison with your neighbors?

  6. Can you spot any damage? (I.e., bubbling paint, siding mold, warping, etc.)
